Congratulations Bandits Cup GU14 Premier Champions (Sept 2009)

The Fusion FC Girls U14 team treated its fans to a demonstration of fantastic soccer at the Bandits Cup Labor Day tournament in Devens, MA. And the great play showed in the results, with the Fusion going undefeated in four matches, including a 3-1 victory over the Sachems in the championship game.
The first tournament of the fall is often called a “tune up”. Well, by the time the Fusion FC finished their tune up at the Inter Bandits Labor Day tournament, they were definitely firing on all cylinders. The Fusion started off the tournament with a 2-0 victory over FC Napoli, and the shutout soccer continued on into their second match, which saw the Fusion playing a strong possession game and coming away with a 3-0 victory over the Grasshoppers FC. The Fusion ladies secured their place in the finals in a hard fought match against Delta FC that ended up knotted in 1-1 tie. With enough points to handily win their bracket, the Fusion went on to the finals to meet Sachems FC. The two teams felt each other out in the early minutes of the first half with action at both ends of the field. The Fusion started the scoring to go up 1-0, but the Sachems refused to yield and soon answered with a goal of their own. And that was how it stood at the half, all tied at 1-1. The Fusion came out strong in the second half, demonstrating the determination to take home a solid win. They closed the door on the Sachems attack, while adding two more goals to their column. When the final whistle blew, it was 3-1 Fusion, the tune up was complete, and the Fusion were the champions of the Premier Division. All in all, it was a very strong showing by the Fusion—one that bodes well as they head into the fall season. Way to go Fusion!

Labor Day Tournament Not for Faint of Heart (Sept 2008)
Building sandcastles on the beach and taking naps in the hammock became distant memories as soon as the Fusion took to the pitch for their “fall tuneup” at the Stars of Massachusetts Labor Day Invitational Tournament in Lancaster, MA. The Fusion started the weekend competition by playing the Stars. The match was locked in a scoreless tie at the half, with the Stars (the ultimate tournament champion) ending up on top 2-0 at the final whistle. The Fusion next met the Grasshopper FC Ole. The Fusion found their rhythm in this game, with a particularly strong showing in the second half to break the 1-1 halftime tie and emerge with a 5-1 victory and a trip to the semifinals to meet the Albertson Celtic Fury of Long Island. This game should have come with a warning label: “Not for the faint of heart! Spectators will likely experience increased heart rate and adrenaline surges.” The Fury struck early in the first half on a high arcing shot to go up 1-0, thereby laying the challenge down at the feet of the Fusion. And the Fusion rose to that challenge, answering several minutes later with a beautiful goal off a corner kick combination to even the score. Once again, the Fusion went into the half tied with their opponents. Fusion came out strong in the second half, with several excellent scoring opportunities and near misses, including a beautiful shot off of a breakaway that hit the crossbar about 1 inch too high to register another tally. Defensively, they held the Fury to just one decent scoring chance, and no goals allowed. Two overtime “golden goal” periods—still tied. Chances for both sides, but the deadlock could not be broken. This was a game to be decided on penalty kicks. And after the regulation 5 kicks…still tied. After 6, STILL tied. After 7, it is, finally, decided, with Albertson advancing to the finals. Fusion fans left feeling great pride for the valiant effort, sportsmanship and pluck of their team. A great weekend of soccer, and a showing that promises many wonderful games as Fusion heads into its fall MAPLE season. “Fasten your seat belts!”
Fusion FC Girls Lift Trophies in Memorial Day Tournament (Spring 2008)

The Fusion capped off their Spring 2008 season with a very impressive showing at the 32nd Annual Needham Invitational Memorial Day Tournament, taking home trophies for a second place finish in the highly competitive 12-team GU12 Premier Division (11 v 11). The Fusion squad was undefeated in their bracket, notching wins against the Coastal Blaze of Maine (4-0), Stars of Massachusetts Athletics (5-1), and Elite SA (1-0). Their strong performance continued in the semifinals, resulting in a 1-0 victory over FC United and a trip to the final match to face the NE Eagles. The first half was hard fought, with opportunities for both sides, yet strong defensive play meant the teams went into halftime locked in a scoreless tie. The Eagles struck once in the middle of the second half, and went on to win the match 1-0. It was a tournament performance that showcased the strong tactical and strategic play that the Fusion team has continued to develop over the years, and foreshadows much more success to come. Congratulations to all the young ladies of Fusion FC for a terrific end of season performance, for which they should be justifiably proud!
Boston University Play Day: Let the (Outdoor) Games Begin! (Spring 2008)
While the snow wasn’t melted everywhere in Boston, fortunately for a number of enthusiastic soccer teams eager to get a jump on the outdoor season (including the Fusion), Nickerson field at BU was open for business on March 9. The BU women’s soccer program hosted a one-day spring play day that proved to be great fun for all involved. The Fusion played a few 30-minute games, in which they had a strong showing (despite the less than balmy conditions and the first chance to play outside). And, true to the place of higher learning in which it was held, they had an opportunity for off-the-field education as well! The Fusion players had an extended Q & A session with a BU player and coach from the women’s program, in which they explored a wide range of topics, from the importance of scholarship, hard work, and teamwork, to the excitement of playing at the college level. The girls clearly relished the experience.
Sports World Indoor League Regular Season and Tournament Champions (Winter 2008)
As cold as it may have been outside this winter, the Fusion U12 Girls did their part to make sure things stayed plenty warm inside the Sports World Center in Tewksbury! In addition to regular winter training sessions, the Fusion participated in the Wednesday night 7 v 7 indoor soccer league at Sports World Center. The fast-paced games helped develop the quick decision making that will serve the players well in the future. And their hard work, in training and in indoor competition, paid some immediate dividends as well. As in 2007, the girls earned first place in the Winter League premier GU12 division, this year with a record of 6-1-0. They also went on to win the tournament championship, which culminated with an exciting victory over Tewksbury United. While we certainly don’t want to rush the return of snowflakes to New England, we look forward to another exciting year of indoor soccer with the Fusion next winter.
